In the mid 1850's Augusta had a prosperous business district on
the riverfront consisting of stores, hotels, saloons and other services
for steamboat passengers.
Frederick Wencker owned and operated a general store on what was
then Water Street. He later ran the post office and a hotel at that location.
In the early 1870's the Missouri River began to change its course
and move away from town. Frederick left his riverfront location and
moved "uptown" to the corner of Locust and Lower Streets.
Today this historic building is known as the Uptown Store and is
home to two unique shops, Stone Ledge Antiques and The Finishing
Touch. Above the store, in what was once living quarters, is The
Stone Ledge Guest Suite. Visit the Uptown Store web site at:www.theuptownshops.com.
